Message	vehicle code in which you are operating it in. I guess they could always right it off as "a safety inspection". My guess is that they were looking for a quick way to search your vehicle. They asked for consent and you gave it to them. You could have said no..which in turn would have made them get out their ticket book and written tickets till their pen ran out of ink. Its sad how some in law enforcement sometimes have nothing better to use and how they exercise their authority...(shrugs shoulders).
